Willow Way Permaculture Farm Named First Official Demonstration Farm in Boulder County

Willow Way, a Longmont Permaculture farm which provides workshops, training, and private sessions in a variety of gardening, farming, and energy conservation skills, recently was named the first official "Demonstration Farm" in Boulder County.

Willow Way offers a variety of services to the community, from free films to half-day classes to their 100 hour Permaculture Design Course. Zia Parker, Head Instructor and owner, said, “Willow Way specializes in applied knowledge for healing the land and healing our bodies, and understanding the connection between them.”

Permaculture, Parker explained, is a “design method for discovering optimum strategies for sustainability for any given place-an urban flat, suburban home, an acreage or anything in between.” She continued, “Permaculture mimics nature.”

Willow Way focuses on providing hands-on learning. Classes include techniques for maximizing food production with four season and food-forest gardening, learning economic energy conservation methods, in addition to solar, greenhouse and cold frame design. Willow Way instructors also teach aquaculture, soil-building, vermiculture (worm cultivation), mycology, water management and earth-works.

The Permaculture Design Course examines all these aspects of Permaculture. Attendees will learn how to work with nature to create designs that conserve water and energy, produce food, regenerate social and ecological systems, build resilience and self-reliance, and save money. Instruction will be rooted in hands-on practices and actively involvement in the evolution of the projects and the design of Willow Way, a working Permaculture system. The class will also visit several other local Permaculture sites, as well as work on community projects.

Parker said, “The Permaculture Design Course is a respected credential in the field of sustainability. It's also one of the most pragmatic forms of green job training.“

“If someone isn't ready for the 100 hour course, they can join for a Saturday class or they can just come for a visit,” said Zia Parker. Willow Way will have two half-day workshops on April 3: Fruit Trees in Permaculture Systems and Chickens 101. In addition, week-long Permaculture classes for children are offered in June and July.

Willow Way also provides an Herbal CSA share, which provides a weekly quantity of organic herbs grown on the farm. The share includes herbal teas, medicinal herbal products, as well as culinary herbs. Herbal CSA members will also receive special herbal formulas hand-picked and mixed to address a variety of common conditions.

About Willow Way Permaculture Farm: Established in 2007, Willow Way Permaculture Farm is a non-profit demonstration farm in Longmont Colorado, specializing in transition skills for earth/body healing, from garden design to aquatic body therapy to energy conservation. Private consultations, individual training courses and the 100 hour Permaculture design course are available to the public.

NICE JEWISH GIRLS GONE BAD + GOOD FOR THE JEWS COMES TO BOULDER
SCHTICKING IT TO THE MAN SINCE 2003

March 2nd @8pm
The Dairy Arts Center
2590 Walnut Street
Boulder, CO
(303) 440-7826
$18 ADV $20 DOOR

Nice Jewish Girls Gone Bad is a refreshing mix of comedy, music, spoken-word and show-stopping burlesque, featuring the gals who learned to smoke at Hebrew School, got drunk at their Bat-Mitzvahs and would rather have more schtuppa than the chupah, featuring performers seen on Comedy Central, HBO and Network TV. These badass chosen chicks boldly dare to deconstruct years of tradition, expectations and guilt in a fast-paced vaudeville extravaganza. It's ain't yo' mama's Fiddler!

After cruising the US for 7 years, last year Nice Jewish Girls Gone Bad opened at The Zipper Theater in NYC with a brand new show which received rave reviews - 3 stars- NY Post, Backstage called it "a spontaneous party" and the Village Voice said it was "super fun." This rendition of mishagas on wheels was directed by Michael Baron (Signature Theater, DC) and choreographed by Jessi Erian (Urban Bush Women and The Electric Company). It's Faster Pussycat in the Borscht Belt, "Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen" gets remixed, Tumbalaika gets a makeover and we all find out what's in Gefilte Fish. It's "Fear Factor" for Jews, although you don't have to be Jewish to love these broads.

Nice Jewish Girls Gone Bad features the booty shaking burlesque stylings of Sister Schmaltz and the queen of quick change, The Goddess Perlman ( Last Comic Standing). They will be touring the Colorado Rockies with the boys of Good For the Jews as they celebrates Jewish traditions and history with unorthodox, irreverent and-of course-HILARIOUS songs about bar mitzvahs and Mel Gibson's stupidity. It is two shows for the price of one.

Nice Jewish Girls Gone Bad has been spreading their own brand of nuevo schmaltz across the land to sold-out crowds in NYC, DC, Baltimore, Boston, Philadelphia, Providence, Miami, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Santa Cruz, Pittsburgh, Madison, Detroit, Montreal, Burlington, Provincetown, The Berkshires, The Hamptons, and of course, The Catskills. Audiences can't get enough of these wayward girls!

“Beyond the Earth Mother” New works by Grahame Atkinson

The Muse Gallery at the WestEnd presents “Beyond the Earth Mother” – New works by Longmont sculptor Grahame Atkinson. The current exhibit reflects his abiding interest in the investigation of the concept of “The Earth Mother”, a spiritual figure who is both of the earth and from the earth embodying creation and creator. The newer pieces tend more towards the abstract but are still recognizably based on the female form.
”I use the female figure as metaphor. In her I see the personification of the interconnectedness of nature and humanity and the cyclical character of existence. She is sometimes pregnant , but not always. She embodies the past, present and the future and is always looking forward to new horizons. She is, and always will be, the genesis of the Earth’s bounty.”

Grahame has energetically pursued his full-time art career since he immigrated to Longmont from England in September of 1990. He utilizes many different sculptural mediums in his works including clay, found tree roots, and rocks, which give his pieces a strong individual presence. His works have been exhibited both throughout the country and internationally. The WestEnd is a dedicated space within the Muse gallery created to provide space for diverse well-known and emerging artists with a variety of themes which include national and local talent. The opening reception will be Friday, November 13, 2009, from 6 - 9 pm. the reception will be catered by the Sugarbeet Restaurant. The exhibition runs through November 13 through December 23. The Muse Gallery Features Local Watercolor Artists

The Muse Gallery is proud to feature two local Watercolor artists, Martha Williams & Carolyn Stafford. These two artists are masters of the watercolor medium. Both are longtime Longmont residents and paint together on a regular basis. Both artists masterfully capture flowers and landscapes in watercolor.

Carolyn Bradley has a background in the arts and has been painting since high school. After several years of art school she switched majors to become a teacher, but her passion for the arts has never left. Carolyn works with Boulder artist Dottie Oatman. Carolyn’s favorite medium is flowers but she is always looking to challenge herself with landscapes and portraits using the plein air method. Watercolors are her favorite because of the quick and fun qualities.

Martha Williams is a native of Colorado and lives in Longmont. Her studio is located on the 2nd floor of the Old Firehouse Art Center. She is a plein-air artist with most of her work done on location. Her paintings reflect her travels from Taos to Provence, Spain & Italy. Martha is a signature member of the CO Watercolor society. LONGS PEAK CREATES UNIQUE, 21ST CENTURY PARTNERSHIP WITH HOME SCHOOLERS

This fall, families will combine home school instruction with public school course offerings.

(Longmont) July 30, 2008 – Longs Peak Middle School’s principal, Matt Buchler, has created a unique synthesis out of two areas that have previously been viewed as poles apart from each other – the public school system and home schooling.

This fall, home school families will be able to enroll their children for a partial-day schedule at the school, thus allowing parents to supplement the home school curriculum with two or more core or electives courses.

“The historical boundaries and definitions of education are fading rapidly as our society moves into the 21st century,” Buchler says. “This partnership will allow us to provide experiences for home schooled students that are difficult to provide outside of a school building. Courses like band, orchestra, and choir, as well as some of our more unique core and electives offerings, such as school newspaper, are good examples.”

If you would like more information about this opportunity, please contact Matt Buchler at (720) 938-0820 or email him at [email protected]
