June 2004 The town's name shows its roots from a time when it had a Sanitarium to work with tuberculosis (TB) patients. In 1882 the sanitarium was started by Rev. Jacob S. Flory and his Church of the Brethren, who had come to the area a few years earlier to work with TB patients. The church, which was part of the sanitarium complex, can be found at 7811 Hygiene Road, Hygiene. The outside walls are sandstone, and plaster walls inside, with wood floors show the group's simplicity. The church is oldest surviving Dunkard church in Colorado and is on the National Registry. The Brethren got the name of Dunkard because they immersed newly baptized members three times in water. The Dunkards either drove patients to a curative sulfur springs south of Rabbit Mountain or brought the water to patients too sick to leave the building. The sanitarium didn't survive but the town did. Hygiene continued to grow and later overtook a neighboring town known as Pella, which was started by George Webster in 1859. In 1885, a railroad from Denver to Lyons was built to move sandstone from quarries in Lyons to the growing town of Denver. Fort Pella served as a depot on that line. Now, dairy farms, a machine welding shop, a feed store, gravel and sand companies and other businesses provide jobs for the rural community. Residents also commute to nearby high-tech companies. One of the biggest issues in town is traffic. The Hygiene Cafe and Clark's Food Store are two favorite meeting places and the local elementary school also serves as community hub. A slower pace and plenty of space continue to draw people to this area, but prices still keep smaller young families from being able to afford downtown Hygiene and the surrounding areas.
